This project is a distinctive fitout that encapsulates SGKS ARCH’s considered and creative approach to interior architecture. Situated just south of Melbourne’s CBD, the penthouse fitout demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform an existing shell into a refined and expressive living environment. Working within the constraints of the original structure, SGKS ARCH embraced the challenge as an opportunity to craft a series of intimate, sculptural spaces that respond both to function and form.
One of the most defining characteristics of the design is the use of bold curves, which soften the rigidity of the existing architecture while promoting a sense of flow and enclosure. These gestures create a heightened sense of intimacy and comfort throughout the home, establishing a strong spatial identity that sets it apart from conventional fit outs. Rather than impose a singular open-plan layout, the project champions spatial diversity, allowing each room to have its own personality while remaining tied into a cohesive whole.
The design decisions were primarily driven by spatial considerations: proportions, movement, light, and how occupants would experience each part of the home. The layout is both fluid and deliberate, with each space unfolding into the next through subtle transitions in form, texture, and light.
Materiality plays a central role in this transformation. A refined palette of tactile surfaces ranging from soft textiles to bold finishes of rusted steel adds layers of sensory engagement. Rich textures, carefully selected materials, and strategic hints of colour inject depth and warmth, while responding to the existing constraints of the building. The result is a harmonious blend of contemporary elegance and character.
This project is a testament to SGKS ARCH’s ability to elevate the ordinary into the more, turning limitations into design opportunities, and delivering a fit out that is both visually compelling and deeply personal.
