Located in St Kilda, a coastal suburb known for its layered character and evolving residential fabric, this two-storey dwelling presents a calm and deliberate architectural response. The project is defined by clarity of form, where proportion, materiality and restraint shape a contemporary home grounded in simplicity.
The design adopts a composed massing strategy, balancing solid and void to create a legible and refined street presence. A strong, rectilinear volume is articulated through subtle shifts in plane and opening, allowing light, privacy and outlook to be carefully managed. The planning prioritises functional living, with clear zoning across two levels to support both shared and private spaces.
Materiality is intentionally restrained. Light grey concrete establishes the primary architectural language, offering durability and a soft, consistent base that avoids heaviness. This is paired with grey brick to introduce texture and rhythm, reinforcing the building’s grounded presence. Together, these materials create a cohesive and timeless palette.
Timber elements at the front door and garage introduce warmth and tactility. These moments are deliberate and measured, softening the overall composition and creating a more inviting interface with the street. A metal front gate and concrete fence complete the frontage, maintaining continuity while ensuring security and definition.
The project is driven by balance. Cool, robust materials are offset by warmer, human-scaled details. The result is a home that feels both refined and liveable, with a clear architectural identity. It is designed to be low-maintenance, enduring, and responsive to everyday living, contributing quietly and confidently to the St Kilda streetscape.
