Wandong Hub & Childcare Centre

CIVIC ARCHITECTURE + CHILDCARE

Located in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, an area defined by established residential streets and growing community infrastructure, this mixed-use development brings together childcare, healthcare and residential living within a clear and cohesive architectural framework.

The ground plane anchors the project with a double-storey childcare centre and a contemporary medical practice, both designed for accessibility, clarity and comfort. Above and behind, residential dwellings are positioned to ensure privacy while maintaining connection to the broader site. The arrangement responds to the natural slope, allowing each component to sit comfortably within its context.

Materiality is warm and deliberate. Brickwork provides texture and permanence, while bronze-tinted glazing introduces depth and softness to the façade. Carefully composed forms guide the eye across the elevation, establishing rhythm and balance. Generous glazing invites natural light into interior spaces, creating bright and calm environments for children, patients and residents alike.

Entries are clearly defined and welcoming, reinforcing legibility across the site. Communal areas are open and considered, supporting everyday interaction while maintaining functional efficiency.

The childcare centre is planned to foster safety and exploration, with adaptable rooms and direct access to outdoor play areas. The medical centre delivers practical, modern facilities for the local community, designed for clarity of movement and patient comfort. Residential dwellings at the rear benefit from quieter outlooks and layered landscaping, balancing retreat with connection.

Through integrated planning and refined material expression, the project demonstrates how community-focused architecture can support diverse uses while remaining grounded, accessible and enduring.
