East Melbourne

RESIDENTIAL

ARCHITECTURE + INTERIOR DESIGN

This renovation in East Melbourne reimagines a 1900 Federation Style red brick home with a bold modern extension, designed by us at SGKS ARCH. The project blends the original home’s character with the sleek lines of concrete and steel. Creating a cohesive space that merges heritage with contemporary design.

The double-story extension enhances the living experience with an open-plan layout, defined by concrete finishes, steel blackened timber accents. This combination creates a striking contrast while maintaining warmth and texture throughout the home. The design promotes seamless transitions between spaces, maximizing natural light and creating a sense of openness. Upstairs, includes spacious bedrooms and a rumpus room, all linked to a rooftop terrace, accessed by a sculptural spiral staircase. The terrace serves as a versatile outdoor space for both entertaining and quiet relaxation.

At the rear of the home, a carport transforms into a covered alfresco dining area, which flows into a private courtyard. This space, which opens to a laneway, offers a quiet outdoor retreat with a sense of privacy, while also connecting to the surrounding neighborhood.

Through our work at SGKS ARCH, this project redefines the family home in East Melbourne. By blending modern architectural elements with the historical context of the original structure, we’ve created a dynamic, functional space that meets the demands of contemporary living while respecting the home’s legacy.
