This project presents a distinctive renovation and thoughtful extension of a character-rich Victorian terrace, blending historical charm with contemporary living. At the heart of the transformation is the activation of a unique three-storey brick tower, tucked away in the rear garden. Once dormant, this vertical element now plays a central role in the reimagined home, offering new spatial possibilities and a striking architectural gesture.
The design centres on maintaining the integrity and inherent joy of the original terrace while enhancing its functionality for modern life. A sleek glazed pavilion has been introduced at the rear, carefully stitched into the existing building fabric. This transparent addition allows natural light to flood deep into the original rooms while establishing a strong visual connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Above the pavilion, an activated roof terrace expands the home’s usable footprint, providing a private outdoor retreat that enjoys elevated views over the surrounding neighbourhood. It serves not only as a recreational space but also as an architectural link between the old and new — an intermediary zone that responds to both the heritage context and the needs of contemporary living.
Materiality and detailing throughout the project are deliberately restrained, ensuring that the new works complement rather than compete with the original structure. Clean lines, a considered palette, and subtle contrasts help define new from old while maintaining a cohesive whole.
This renovation is more than just an update; it’s a dialogue between past and present — a careful balancing act that respects the terrace’s historical essence while confidently introducing a new chapter. The result is a home that feels both grounded in its heritage and effortlessly suited to modern life.
