Trawool

RESIDENTIAL
ARCHITECTURE

Located in Trawool, a regional setting defined by expansive landscapes and open rural character, this single residential dwelling is positioned within a large site to maximise outlook, light and spatial clarity. The project responds to its setting through a restrained footprint and an elevated living experience that engages directly with the surrounding terrain.

The house is organised vertically, separating utility and living functions across two levels. Ground level accommodates parking and services, allowing the upper level to remain open, light-filled and uninterrupted. Above, the first floor is dedicated to an expansive open-plan kitchen, living and dining zone, extending seamlessly to an outdoor space. This elevated arrangement captures long views across the landscape while reinforcing a sense of privacy and retreat.

The planning prioritises clarity and flow. Internal spaces are arranged to support ease of movement and visual continuity, with the kitchen acting as a central anchor to daily living. Openings are carefully positioned to frame views and draw in natural light, softening the transition between inside and out. The outdoor area becomes an extension of the living zone, supporting both everyday use and informal gathering.

Materially, the dwelling is defined by a considered contrast. Charcoal metal cladding forms a durable and grounded outer layer, allowing the building to sit quietly within its environment. This is balanced by exposed timber structure and moments of timber façade, introducing warmth, texture and a tactile quality to the built form. The palette is restrained, allowing material expression and proportion to define the architectural character.

Set within a generous landscaped setting, the house is positioned to sit lightly on the land while maintaining a strong connection to its context. The result is a calm, contemporary dwelling that brings together clarity of planning, refined materiality and a direct relationship to the landscape.
