Albert Park

RESIDENTIAL

ARCHITECTURE

This contemporary beachside extension to a Victorian terrace house in Albert Park thoughtfully enhances the original structure while preserving its connection to the surrounding coastal environment. Located just a short walk from the beach, the extension was designed to form a bold yet respectful contrast to the heritage-listed home, celebrating both old and new elements through considered materiality and form.

A key feature of the design is the retention of the existing red brick fence along the laneway, which visually and physically connects the new addition to the historic home behind it. The use of natural timber cladding, charcoal render, and dark framing gives the extension a distinctly modern edge, creating a clear visual departure from the white-rendered street-facing façade of the original terrace. However, the red brick gable roof of the extension subtly echoes the materiality of the house’s original rear, providing warmth, continuity, and a sense of cohesion across the entire property.

Internally, the ground floor has been opened up to form a light-filled, open-plan living space that flows effortlessly into a landscaped private courtyard—perfect for modern living and entertaining. Large windows and sliding doors enhance the indoor-outdoor connection and bring in abundant natural light. Upstairs, the extension accommodates spacious new bedrooms designed with comfort and privacy in mind, while the original main bedroom has been carefully retained at the front of the house. This decision respects the historic character and proportions of the Victorian terrace, ensuring the old and new elements coexist harmoniously.

Overall, the project balances contemporary design with heritage sensitivity, transforming the home for modern living without sacrificing its original charm.
