Nestled within the bustling heart of Hobart’s city centre, this conceptual medical centre by SGKS ARCH explores the delicate balance between urban formality and the calm, restorative environment essential to healthcare spaces. The design embraces simplicity and clarity in its façade, using a rhythmic grid system that introduces a sense of order and familiarity within the dense urban fabric. This grid not only aligns with the surrounding architectural language but also becomes an important element in mediating privacy, light, and views.
While the structure sits confidently within its city context, the façade operates as a visual and spatial buffer, subtly shielding patients and visitors from the noise and intensity of the streetscape. The integration of greenery within the building envelope introduces a layer of softness, an ecological veil that enhances both the building’s performance and its emotional tone. Vegetation is used strategically to blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, creating moments of calm and visual relief throughout the facility.
