ARCHITECTURE + INTERIOR DESIGN
Situated in the heart of St Kilda, one of Melbourne’s most culturally rich and architecturally diverse suburbs, the Chapel project is a carefully conceived renovation and extension of an existing family home. The project exemplifies how contemporary architecture can breathe new life into a traditional residential structure—enhancing functionality, comfort, and design appeal while preserving the integrity and charm of the original building.
SGKS ARCH was engaged to reimagine the home for a growing family, focusing on creating a modern, spacious, and flexible living environment that responds to changing lifestyle needs. The existing layout was no longer sufficient, and the clients were seeking a long-term solution that would allow them to stay in the neighbourhood they love.
From the outset, the design process involved close collaboration with a team of consultants and the local council. Through strategic planning and a clear design vision, we were able to secure town planning approval efficiently—demonstrating our ability to navigate regulatory frameworks while maintaining architectural quality.
The new extension introduces a clean, modern aesthetic that contrasts with and complements the original structure. It features open-plan living areas, additional bedrooms, and improved connectivity between indoor and outdoor spaces. Key design priorities included enhancing natural light, increasing energy efficiency, and creating a better overall spatial experience. The use of skylights, large glazing elements, and internal reconfiguration helped transform the home into a bright, functional space tailored to the family’s needs.
With rising property values and limited land availability in inner-city suburbs like St Kilda, this project offers a compelling case for extending rather than relocating. It’s a smart and sustainable response to urban living that supports multi-generational occupancy, future flexibility, and long-term liveability.
The Chapel project is a testament to how good design can transform existing homes—extending their life, purpose, and connection to place well into the future.
